Aubrey William (Bill) Steven
Most Illustrious Companion Stevens was born and grew up in the agricultural community of Canning in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia, to George and Frances Stevens, one of thirteen children. Following his formal schooling, he began his working career with a local food processor but later was discovered to have an aptitude for work in the Steeple Jack Business where he learned the painting and decorating trades. Later he worked for several contractors including the Federal Government, as a painter and finally opted to begin his own contracting company, in which, though retired, he is still engaged. During his travels in and about the Valley, he met and was infatuated with a lady from Hants County, Carol Ann Carr, and after a well-deserved courtship, she agreed to become his bride and together began their journey. Over the years they raised three daughters and a son, as well as several fur babies. |
Bill was also community minded and began forty-five-year service and Past President with the Habitant Branch No. 73, Royal Canadian Legion, a member of the Salvation Army and an Elder in the United Church in Kingsport where he currently resides. He also worked as a volunteer with the Valley Rehab Society and a supporter of TOPS.
An entertainer by nature, he learned, among other skills to play the guitar and developed a love of song. He played with several local bands over the years and explored the world of acting, when he played a role in a movie about Elvis, “Is the King really gone?”
During his time in the Canning area, he caught the eye of several prominent Freemasons and in 1993 was raised a Master Mason under the charter of Scotia Lodge No. 28. He showed great interest and understanding and advanced quickly becoming Master of Scotia Lodge on five occasions. He also affiliated with Horton Lodge No 132 and Kentville Lodge No 58 where he served as Master three times. His Craft Lodge service included service as Grand Steward GLNS, DGDofC and DDGM Kings District.
In 1997 under the mentorship of V. Ex. Comp. Worthy Beeler, he began his journey through the York Rite by joining Cornwallis Chapter No 26. His service there was no less impressive; serving the Chapter as High Priest five times. In 2004 he served Grand Chapter as Grand Master of the First Veil and later as District Grand Superintendent for District # 3.
He was consecrated a Sir Knight in Mount Zion Preceptory No 73, serving as Presiding Preceptor in 2016 and is currently the Chaplain.
In 1999, Companion Stevens became a Royal and Select Master in Adoniram Council No 10 and served as Thrice Illustrious Master in 2005. He received the degree of Super Excellent Master and quickly became involved in the drama of that degree. He later joined MJA Wagner Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners and served as Commander Noah in 2016. In 2006 he served as the Grand Inspector General for Nova Scotia. He was elected Grand Principal Conductor of the Work in 2017, Deputy Grand Master in 2018 and Most Puissant Grand Master in 2019.
Being in the Masonic Limelight, Companion Stevens has received invitations to several prestigious Masonic Bodies, all of which he has served with zealous energy.
However, during his Masonic career Most Illustrious Companion has never forgotten his roots and has continued to serve his Craft Lodge with Loyalty, Satisfaction and Enjoyment.
